Subscribe? Good to know!
- For minors starting in September, after the registration period in March, a draw takes place in April if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.
- For minors starting in February, after the registration period in October, a draw takes place in November if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.

For the minors with places still available applies until the closing of the subscription period: Once a minor is full, it is closed!

In addition, if the number of subscribers after four weeks is below the norm; this minor may possibly be withdrawn. So if you are interested, sign up immediately!

Subscribe in time!

Note:
For HAN students it means that, in case of cancellation of the first choice AFTER the period of decision (this takes a full month) they may re-subscribe for the still available minors.

Even then: Once a minor is full, it is closed!

A good overview of the HAN minors can be found in the minors app! The app is accessible via: http://www.minoren-han.nl/

Our body contains trillions of cells, with many different shapes and functions. However, they all develop from one single cell - the zygote cell - and they all have the same DNA content. During our life, some of these cells might lose their control and start acting in a uncontrolled manner, becoming cancer cells. Is there a link between our body development and tumorigenesis?

In this course, you will be studying the central molecular mechanisms which contribute to formation and maintenance of a tumor. Despite the many possible causes, these mechanisms are often “uncontrolled and dysregulated” molecular pathways which are usually very tightly under control during our development.

You will be investigating these mechanisms by using two different model systems: an in vitro system - BLM Melanoma tumor cells and an in vivo system, the nematode C. elegans.

Topics:

- Developmental and Cell Biology

- Cancer Biology

- Genetic Model Organisms

- Gene expression regulation

- Advanced Molecular Biology techniques

After this course the students:

- Will have insight on a few important molecular pathways which controls embryogenesis, morphogenesis and cell differentiation in animal development.

- Will have insight on how these molecular pathways act in cancer cells.

- Will have insight on what is a stem cell.

- Will have a view on the molecular mechanisms which drive and maintain breast and colon cancer cells.

- Will be able to manipulate a tumor cell line, to perform a reliable qPCR experiment.

- Will be able to manipulate C. elegans and understand its advantages in biomedical research.

- Will have a view on the most important molecular techniques which are applied in development and cancer research (but not only).

- Will be able to perform experiments and evaluate the effectiveness of fundamental scientific research in the field of biomedical research.

Competencies applied and assessed during this course:

- Design of experiments

- Experimenting

- Analyzing results

- Management and administration of a lab journal

- Reporting (scientific writing)

- Presentation (public speaking skills)

- Planning and project-based work which mimic work performed in an internship

- Teamwork

- Professional development

For whom?

This course is very relevant for undergraduate (BSc.) Biology lab students (laboratory technician training/HBO) who are interested in Biomedical Research. We aim to train lab technicians who can fulfill the job demand in many academic and company-based labs in the Netherlands which apply scientific research in these specific fields. Also, this course is interesting to give a perspective on applied biomedical research to a BSc. student who will like to further undergo a MSc. in the area of cancer biology and developmental biology.

Students who are part of the Degree in “Life Sciences” at the HAN School of Biosciences and Chemistry and choose “Biomedical Research: Cancer and Developmental Biology” as part of their major - have priority. In case of a large number of applications for the minor, students might be selected through an interview.

Admission requirements

You must have at least 2 years lab experience in higher vocational education in Biology to be able to work in a research project undertaken in this course. If your lab experience is limited (from BSc. students outside the HBO/applied sciences domain), please get in contact with the course coordinators (bmls-course10.atbc@han.nl) to discuss if previous experience is enough to start the course. In general, in order to start, students must demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the areas of Molecular/Cell Biology and Biochemistry.

General requirement for HBO students: earned your propaedeutic certificate

  • 2 written exams
  • Research report
  • Research presentation
  • Performance assessment

Timetable details are published before the start of this course. Students are expected to be available Mon-Friday on the Nijmegen campus.

Working methods

  • Lectures
  • Workshops
  • Guest lectures
  • Lab practical lessons
  • Tutorials: Assignment-based education

Block minor
This minor is a block minor. The minor is offered twice a year in September and February.
