Coaching and conversation skills are crucial in today's organisations around the world. These skills help create a positive, psychologically safe and supportive work environment that improves employee satisfaction and performance, and ultimately leads to better results for the organisation.
To communicate more effectively and successfully with others, you need good coaching and conversation skills that are based on sound psychological, cultural, and organisational-theory foundations. The other person will feel valued, accepted, and heard. Moreover, these skills are essential for promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace by understanding, acknowledging, and respecting individual differences. These skills are also essential for promoting collaboration and teamwork, because they help you to understand and respect the perspectives and beliefs of others.
If you're interested in this minor and think it could take you further in your career, apply! The minor in Coaching in Organisations is a collaboration of the studies in Business Administration, Learning & Development and Applied Psychology.
Outline
You will conduct an authentic coaching programme and recruit two coachees - persons who receive coaching - with real development questions at work. Examples are:
• I prefer to be in charge, but I need to delegate more for my health. How can I go about doing that?
• One of my employees has recently been performing poorly. I've addressed him countless times about it, but it doesn't solve anything and even ends in an argument. I need to take action because this cannot continue.
• I have a problem with my Dutch colleagues' directness. How can I handle it better?
• I am pretty introverted, but I would still like to work in the department where we interact with the public on a regular basis. What steps should I take?
During five to six 1-hour coaching sessions, you will use basic conversation skills, supplemented with specific coaching techniques, and interventions to address such work-related development questions. Some examples of methods to be applied include solution-focused coaching, motivational interviewing, body-centered work, and performance coaching. You tailor the coaching sessions to the wishes and possibilities of your coachee.
You are the tool via which coaching takes occur. As a result, understanding yourself is critical. Throughout this minor, you will meticulously reflect on yourself, what you have learnt, and your activities as a coach. This leads to increased self-awareness and the ability to make professional decisions that not only improve the quality of the coach-coachee relationship, but also the attainment of specific goals. In addition, your professional development will accelerate.
Knowledge improves understanding and underpins the coaching process. Therefore, we believe it is important that you are able to conceptualise and analyse the coachee's personal development question by connecting relevant psychological, organisational, and cultural theories and models to the situation in which this development question occurs.
Through training sessions, supervision, working groups, and lectures, you will work on the aforementioned topics, as well as others, to improve your knowledge and skills. A team of experienced lecturers with expertise in individual coaching, (neuro)psychology, business, biology, team coaching, pedagogy, international management consulting & coaching, and organisational anthropology, will support your professional development process.
Learning Outcomes
Learning outcome 1: professional coaching attitude, contact and contract
You relate to the coachee with an authentic, attuned and professional attitude. This attitude creates an environment of trust and psychological safety from which you empower the coachee. Together you establish a clear and goal-oriented contract in which you track progress.
Learning Outcome 2: Self-knowledge and self-reflection
You reflect methodically on yourself, what you have learned and your actions in the role of coach. The reflection leads to making professional choices that contribute to the quality of the coaching-coachee relationship, the progress of the set goals and your development as a professional.
Learning Outcome 3: Problem analysis and accountability
You conceptualise and analyse a work-related personal development question of the coachee. You link relevant psychological, cultural and/or business theories & models to the context in which this question takes place. On this basis, you will report in writing and discuss verbally.
Learning outcome 4: Carrying out and substantiating a (suitable) coaching trajectory
You conduct an intake and several coaching sessions with a professional about a work-related personal development question. You clarify this question and set joint goals. During coaching, you use appropriate techniques and interventions to improve performance and stimulate behavioural change in the coachee.
Conditions for participation
The minor Coaching in Organisations is open to all, national and international, students from all higher education programs who have completed their 60 ECTS (or equivalent) first year study requirements.
During classes, the language of instruction is exclusively English. It requires you to be able to express yourself clearly and concisely in spontaneous conversations, and corresponds to English at level B2 (CEFR). This is not tested, but it is the student's own responsibility.
Please note that if the program overlaps too much with your education, it will not contribute significantly to your development.
If you are unsure whether you are eligible for the programme, please contact the minor's coordinator for more information.
Assessment
The assessment program consists of three assignments:
1. You take 30 minutes of footage from your coaching sessions that show what you have to offer. In this footage, you show fragments of your intake and several coaching sessions with your coachee about a development question at work. You clarify the question and set joint goals. During the coaching, you make use of appropriate coaching techniques and coaching interventions to encourage lasting behavioural change in the coachee.
2. You reflect methodically on yourself, what you have learned, and your actions in the role of coach. This reflection leads you to making professional choices that contribute to the quality of the coaching-coachee relationship, the progress of the goals set, and your own development as a professional. During a classroom presentation, you will demonstrate your reflection using a medium of your choice, such as paper, video, or audio.
3. Formal knowledge links psychological, cultural, and organisational theories to a coachee's development question. Based on this, you write an essay and discuss your ideas in a classroom presentation.
Class Schedule
We reserve up to 12 hours a week for your classes, which take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Additionally, you have to do homework, prepare for class days, and conduct coaching sessions on your own time.
