Registration for the Dutch minor is via this link
Subscribe? Good to know!
- For minors starting in September, after the registration period in March, a draw takes place in April if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.
- For minors starting in February, after the registration period in October, a draw takes place in November if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.
For the minors with places still available applies until the closing of the subscription period: Once a minor is full, it is closed!
In addition, if the number of subscribers after four weeks is below the norm; this minor may possibly be withdrawn. So if you are interested, sign up immediately!
Subscribe in time!
Note: For HAN students it means that, in case of cancellation of the first choice AFTER the period of decision (this takes a full month) they may re-subscribe for the still available minors.
Even then: Once a minor is full, it is closed!
A good overview of the HAN minors can be found in the minors app! The app is accessible via: http://www.minoren-han.nl/
The Bio-Nanotechnology Minor focuses on the interface between biomedical engineering and chemistry, and in this sense is a both a differentiation and specializing minor. Are you following a (bio)medical or chemistry study specialization? Then this minor is for you! Students from different specializations collaborate in the multi-disciplinary area of nanoparticle theory, learn to think and perform research in a multi-disciplinary context.
This minor is offered in both English and Dutch, depending on the semester (Dutch site).
Throughout the duration of the minor, you’ll learn to produce polymeric nanoparticles in practical classes, and functionalize them with biologically relevant groups or peptides. The physical properties of these bio-hybrid nanoparticles are characterized to ultimately study and analyze their interaction with biological systems (cells) with techniques like confocal microscopy (CLSM), DLS and SEM/EDX.
Do you want to learn how to think and work in a multi-disciplinary approach? In the practicals, (bio)-medical technology and (bio)-analytical chemistry these are brought together. (Bio)-medical students and chemistry students need to share expertise with each other, making multidisciplinary teamwork essential. The expertise from the different specializations is required at different times, so students learn to take the initiative and lead when needed. This comes together in a research proposal that students will write with their multidisciplinary team.
Topics
The following subjects are covered in this minor:
- Synthesis of nanoparticles
- Modification of nanoparticles
- Functionalizing nanoparticles
- Analysis and monitoring of nanoparticles with CLSM, DLS and SEM/EDX.
Type of minor
- This is a differentiation minor. In a differentiation minor, you’ll develop your professional competences in a different or wider context.
- This is also a specialization minor. It allows you to specialize further within your own professional profile.
In this minor, you will learn the theory and practical side of producing, manipulating and monitoring nanoparticles. You will learn how to make nanoparticles, and to functionalize them with biologically relevant groups and peptides. To analyze these nanoparticles, you’ll use techniques like confocal microscopy, DLS and SEM/EDX. Intermediate products from the experiments are provided as a backup in case student experiments don’t work.
The practical classes are supported by tutorial meetings and theory classes that complement the practical classes. The theory subjects are given in in 3-4 week blocks. In addition to this, there are guest lecturers who give classes on recent developments in bio-nanotechnology. Participating in this minor gives students understanding of the processes involved in setting up and monitoring target therapies in patients with tumors, biomolecule trafficking and the link to pharmacology.
Competences:
- Question clarification
- Experiments with nanoparticles
- Research results analysis
- Management and administration
- Reporting and presenting research
- Collaboration in a research team.
General prerequisites:
Foundation year has been completed.
A minor is most valuable when it ties in with your degree program or your professional profile, is at an appropriate level and does not overlap with your major.
Who is this for?
There is capacity for a maximum of 18 students in both semester 1 and 2. The Bio-Nanotechnology Minor is a bridge between (bio)-medical technology and chemistry. It is open to students from both a (bio)-medical or chemistry applied science study specialization.
Good to know
2022-2023 Semester 1: English, Semester 2: Nederlands
The chosen context areas are: pharma, bioinspired and biobased. The educational model is project-based education.
The theory modules “Self-organization", "Bioconjugation", “Analysis of nanomaterials", “Proteins as nanomaterials", “Biological interactions of nanomaterials" and "Monitoring and targeting of nanodrugs" are offered in the form of lectures and seminars, and are directly related to the practical classes.
