Are you interested in maximizing the potential of talented young athletes for future elite sport performance? Register for the ‘Performance development in young athletes’ exchange course offered at HAN University of Applied Sciences.
In the ‘Performance development in young athletes’ exchange course you will contribute to talent identification and talent development in a professional sports organization by using knowledge from the areas of exercise physiology, technical/tactical sport skills and sport psychology.
You will make use of literature and conduct tests in a group of talented athletes to solve a practical problem put forward by the sports organization. You will translate the results in a practical advice for the sports organization, which can be used to improve processes of talentidentification and/or development.
The main objective of the minor Sports & Talent is:
With the execution of a practical assignment, the student will make a planned and evidence-based contribution to the specific need on the part of a sport organization in the context of talent identification and/or talent development.
This primary objective comprises the following secondary objectives:
- The student knows and understands the main theories and mechanisms how sport performances come about seen from three different disciplines (physiology, technical/tactical and psychological) and is able to apply this knowledge in sport specific cases
- The student understands how performance determining factors of different disciplines interact with each other and can apply this knowledge in sport specific cases
- The student analyses the sport specific practical problem independently based on existing knowledge, insights and characteristics of the situation, resulting in a research question.
- Based on the analyses the student designs an adequate method to be able to answer the formulated question.
- The student is able to carry out relevant measurements and analyses in practice that contribute to solving the problem.
- The student is able to supply and present theoretical and practical advice based on conclusions and discussion that solves the problem that exists in that practice.
- The student develops him/herself personally and professionally and is able to tackle the problem with increasing self-regulation behavior.
An exchange course will be of most benefit to you if it complements your study and/or your professional profile, is at an appropriate level and does not overlap with your major.
For whom?
- You are in possession of a completed propaedeutic year, propaedeutic year certificate
- You are interested in competitive sports and you like to contribute to the identification and development of talented young athletes
- You are enrolled in a relevant study, such as: Physical Education Teacher Training, Sport, Health and Management, Sport Exercise Education, Physiotherapy or Sports and Exercise Sciences.
Admission requirements
- You have successfully completed the 1st year of a higher vocational level course and you have basic knowledge of exercise physiology, sport psychology and/or training/exercise theory
- You are able to read and understand professional English literature
- There are a maximum of 6 places available for students from other educational institutions
- It is advised to be able to speak English proficiently (English Minor)

- This minor is offered in English (September - January) and in Dutch (February - July).
- Students can put forward a sports organization and a practical assignment themselves. Contact us for more information.

During this exchange course your performance will be assessed in the following ways:
- Written examination; application of knowledge on exercise physiology, technical/tactical sport skills and sport psychology
- Advisory report; analysis and solution of the problem
- Defense; reflection on the advice and your professional development
The practical assignment can be done at a sports organization that we provide, but you can also propose your own sports organization. Contact us for more information.
Every sports organization puts forward a unique practical problem to solve. At the start of the semester, students will have to apply for an assignment at a sports organization.
This exchange course has the following schedule and working methods:
Schedule
- Classes are taught 3 days per week (about 4,5 hours per day, about 16 weeks)
- Time to be invested in studying and the assignments is approximately 40 hours per week about 16 weeks and can include evenings and/or weekends)
