Subscribe? Good to know!
- For minors starting in September, after the registration period in March, a draw takes place in April if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.
- For minors starting in February, after the registration period in October, a draw takes place in November if there are at that time more subscribers than available places.
For the minors with places still available applies until the closing of the subscription period: Once a minor is full, it is closed!
In addition, if the number of subscribers after four weeks is below the norm; this minor may possibly be withdrawn. So if you are interested, sign up immediately!
Subscribe in time!
Note: For HAN students it means that, in case of cancellation of the first choice AFTER the period of decision (this takes a full month) they may re-subscribe for the still available minors.
Even then: Once a minor is full, it is closed!
A good overview of the HAN minors can be found in the minors app! The app is accessible via: http://www.minoren-han.nl/
The Molecular Plant Biology exchange course in semester 1 and semester 2 at HAN offers the latest developments in molecular level plant research.
On completing the course you will be able to perform experiments on molecular plant biology, thus contributing to solving nutrition issues or plant disease control.
You will gain advanced experience in areas such as DNA and molecular breeding research. You will also gain practical hands-on skills that you can directly apply to your current job or future laboratory career.
You will work with cutting edge molecular level research to complete several practical assignments based on real research. Examples of assignments are gene expression and the metabolites formed during fruit colour formation, CRISPR-Cas9 construction and transformation using different techniques, plant response to abiotic stress at molecular level and developing the method of micropropagation in vitro for the crop of their own choice. Click here for more information.
A final theoretical assignment involves the development of a new crop plant with novel characteristics and to present this development in a scientific display poster. Consult http://www.han.nl/opleidingen/exchange-courses/molecular-plant-biology/
Topics
- Evolution of plants / origins of agriculture
- Plant identification / Growth and development
- Plant physiology / Secondary metabolites
- Plant-environment interactions / Plant-pathogen interactions
- Evolution of the genome / Molecular genetics
- Plant cell and tissue culture / Plant transformation
- Functional genomics / Sequencing
- Classical plant breeding / Molecular plant breeding
- Genetic modification of plants
- Transposons and gene silencing
The list of learning outcomes below will help you decide whether this exchange course matches your personal goals.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course, you will be able to perform experiments and evaluate the effectiveness and benefit of basic scientific research in the field of molecular plant biology.
Competences
You are able to:
- Investigate the expression of genes involved in colour development
- Investigate proteins involved in plant-pathogen interactions
- Perform data analysis
- Develop a research plan and a poster about a new crop
- Think about new applications in crops
- Clarify a research question
- Develop and carry out experiments
- Analyse results
- Manage and administrate
- Present and report results
An exchange course will be of most benefit to you if it complements your lab study and/or your lab professional profile, if it is at an appropriate level and if it does not overlap with your major.
For whom?
Relevant to undergraduate lab students (Laboratory Technician Training and/or Biology Teacher Training) who are interested in molecular plant biology. It is also suitable for Laboratory Technician graduates currently active in the field who wish to advance their knowledge of molecular plant biology.
Admission requirements
You must have at least 2 years lab experience in higher vocational education in Biology and be able to display sufficient knowledge, skills and aptitude in the areas of Cell Biology DNA, RNA and protein.
General admission requirements:
- Earned your propaedeutic certificate.
Exchange Course = Minor
If you are doing a degree course at HAN or other university of applied sciences in the Netherlands, you can take this exchange course as your Minor.
Assessment
During this exchange course your performance will be assessed in the following ways:
- Knowledge test
- Theme test
- Plant file and poster presentation: A New Crop
- Research and practice reports
- Laboratory notebook and the working attitude during practice
- Presentations during tutorials
The semester starts in the week of 1 Feb and 1 Sep.
Timetable details are published before the start of this course. Students are expected to be available Mon-Friday on the Nijmegen campus in order to fully benefit. This exchange course has the following schedule and working methods:
Schedule
- Semester 1 and Semester 2
- Contact hours: 8 hours per week
- Practice: 10 hours per week
