As a future professional in any area, you may often wonder why people behave the way they do and how to influence them. It is therefore useful to have psychological knowledge and skills in your professional backpack, and mastering coaching techniques that are relevant to your goal.

Do you want to experience this together with interested fellow international and Dutch students and perform practical assignments in which you learn to assess and change behaviour? Then sign up for the course "Psychology, Behaviour Change for Professionals" at the HAN-University of Applied Sciences in the oldest city of the Netherlands: Nijmegen.

Practical assignment 1 is advising on a behavioural issue within an organisation. Examples of such issues are -1- After the break at a school it is a mess in the canteen. How to tackle this? -2- In hospital X nurses often do not report on dangerous situations. Why is this and how can this be improved? -3- My employees produce less output in the course of the day, what can I do to maintain productivity levels? Your task is to orient on the problem at stake, collect data (for instance behavioural data or interviews), analyse them and look for explanations. Finally you suggest and present solutions to your client.

Practical assignment 2 is to coach an individual, the coachee, on a personal issue he or she has. That individual can be someone in your immediate vicinity, but also someone at home. In that case you will be coaching on a distance. Some examples of these issues are -1- I often let others grind me down but I want to stand up for myself, -2- I want to have fewer conflicts with my colleagues, -3- I like to be in total control, but would have to delegate more in order to stay healthy, or -4- Every time I start working out, I quit after just a few weeks. I would like to keep it up now. In order to coach someone you will have to put yourself in the position of your coachee, you will need to understand him or her; this is not easy. It is as the Dutch philosopher Wijnaendts Francken (1863-1944) once said, 'the art of listening is often more difficult than that of speaking'. As we all are different, there is not one solution to serve all. That is why we do not limit you to learning a specific coaching method, rather to use available methods in an eclectic way, do what the coachee needs.

Below a number of themes that we cover during the course:

  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Practical applications from Motivational Interviewing, Brief Solution-Focussed Coaching, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy
  • Physical interventions based on muscle relaxation and respiratory regulation
  • Online and e-coaching
  • Healthy and unhealthy behaviour / effective and ineffective behaviour
  • Non-conscious behavioural influencing such as nudging
  • Analysis of qualitative data

The learning outcomes and competences below will help you decide whether this exchange course matches your personal goals. Once you have completed this course, you:

  • can build a working relationship by tuning your behaviour to that your conversation partner,
  • can initiate a meaningful change in an individual by coaching in a one-on-one relationship,
  • can initiate a planned behavioural change within an organization by performing a problem inventory, defining solution directions with an advisory plan for behavioural change.

  • You develop your ability to assess behaviour.
  • You increase your ability to influence behaviour.
  • You professionalizes to the extent to which you can reflect on your own behaviour and that of others.

A course will be of benefit to you if it complements your study and/or your professional profile, is at an appropriate level and does not overlap with your major program.

For whom?
Any undergraduate student, International or Dutch,  interested in increasing psychological knowledge and skill in his or her work processes in an international oriented environment, is more than welcome. In principle, this course is suitable for all students. However, students from social studies may experience considerable overlap with the program of their own major. If in doubt, please contact the coordinator Gijs Bloemsaat.

Admission requirements

  • Minimum at the start of the program: 100 EC. The credit system is based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). If in doubt, please contact the coordinator.
  • Dutch students require a successful propaedeutic exam + 40 EC in their sophomore (second) year.
  • Effective communication in written and spoken English.

  • Assignment 2: Video compilation of and a reflection on a coaching trajectory.
