For popular minors a draw takes place 3 to 4 weeks after the opening, if there are at that time more subscribers than available places. For the minors with places still available applies until the closing of the subscription period: Once a minor is full, it is closed!

In addition, if the number of subscribers after three weeks is below the norm; this minor may possibly be withdrawn. So if you are interested, sign up immediately!

Note: For HAN students it means that, in case of cancellation of the first choice AFTER the period of decision (this takes about three weeks) they may re-subscribe for the still available minors.

  • How do you determine the number of pips on a die from a camera image?
  • Can you transfer hand movement with a web-cam into a mouse command?
  • How do you determine the number plate details from a moving vehicle?
  • How do you follow objects under specific conditions?
  • Conduct experiments with lighting techniques and light properties to optimise images.


  • You receive extensive tuition in the area of image recognition and image processing. You also acquire practical skills that allow you to build up experience with image recognition and image processing.
  • You learn to use software tools for image recognition and image processing.
  • You learn to use and implement algorithms when devising solutions for assignments and working on your own ideas.
  • You develop a software program to acquire and process camera images.

Block exchange course

This exchange course is offered once a year in a block during a semester.

Type of exchange course

This is a specialisation exchange course. This means it enables you to further deepen your skills and knowledge within your own profession (professional profile).

Learning outcomes

  • Optimise camera images by applying the correct lighting techniques and influencing environmental factors
  • Apply image processing operators
  • Develop a set of image operators that is especially suited for application in embedded systems
  • Integrate a camera set-up with a microcontroller or microcomputer
  • Develop an embedded application on a microcontroller or microcomputer based on image recognition and image processing


  • Develop an embedded system in which image data plays an essential role
  • Translate a customer wish/idea into technical specifications
  • Convincingly present and demonstrate self-developed products for colleagues
  • Work thematically using a plan of approach, time plan, communication with group members and progress reports

For whom?

The exchange course is especially suited to students studying Embedded Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Technology.

Admission requirements

  • You like to work in a structured fashion and are an analytical thinker
  • You have at least basic knowledge of programming language ANSI-C
  • You have knowledge, skills or experience with one or more of the following topics:
    o Basic digital techniques such as Boolean algebra and numerical systems
    o Working thematically in the field of engineering
    o Data communication: Ethernet, Firewire, IP
    o Developing applications for PC or microcontroller
    o Higher order programming language such as Java, C# or related programming experience

Nice to know

In case there are no admissions from foreign students, the minor will be taught in Dutch.


The exchange course is part of the study programme Electrical and Electronic Engineering; the level and quality of the assessment is guaranteed by the Examination Committee of the Institute of Engineering at HAN.

You can earn 30 ECTS credits for this course, which is divided into 10 modular examinations.

  • The first theory subject is assessed by means of a written exam and an oral exam.
  • The second theory subject is assessed by means of 2 written exams.
  • The project is assessed based on the delivered products:
    • A research report
    • A functional requirements document
    • An Intermediate product demonstration/presentation
    • A technical realization document
    • The realized product
    • A final product demonstration/presentation

The two product demonstrations/presentations are check marks. The average of the remaining eight grades forms the final grade for the course.

Students have two chances at each modular examination, i.e. there is one resit opportunity for each exam.


The course is divided into two blocks of eight weeks. There is a maximum of four contact days each week.
