Subscribe? Good to know!

For popular minors a draw takes place 3 to 4 weeks after the opening, if there are at that time more subscribers than available places. For the minors with places still available applies until the closing of the subscription period: Once a minor is full, it is closed!

In addition, if the number of subscribers after three weeks is below the norm; this minor may possibly be withdrawn. So if you are interested, sign up immediately!

Note: For HAN students it means that, in case of cancellation of the first choice AFTER the period of decision (this takes about three weeks) they may re-subscribe for the still available minors.

Control Systems Engineering is indispensable to almost every application in which machines or processes are controlled. There is a growing demand for qualified personnel in the field of electrical power supply. Local companies are increasingly looking for practical experience with microcontroller-based control. The minor Out of Control gives you the opportunity to broaden your experience in this field.

The aim of the minor Out of Control is to learn to work with the control systems related aspects in a multi-disciplinary team. Each team has a separate research project. These research projects have been acquired from businesses, and are in line with the research of the Research Group Control Systems Engineering.

The following research projects are examples:

 

  • Design of power converters or energy management strategies in grids in which there is decentralized generation or storage of sustainable energy
  • A 3-axle robotic arm for safe robot-human-interaction. Various subjects are available based on this set-up (e.g. position control, force feedback, control and safety)
  • Hybrid drive lines (Vehicles and Machines, CNC)  

This minor is organized in cooperation with the master programs at the HAN. Specifically the MAS and the MCSE. In this minor you will follow one module of 15 EC together with the master students; the module “systems modeling”. In the other 15 EC you will follow the course digital control and smart coding of 5 EC.

Type of minor
This is a specialisation exchange course. This means it enables you to further deepen your skills and knowledge within your own profession (professional profile).

Block exchange course
This exchange course is offered once a year in a block during the first semester.

Learning outcomes

In the minor Out of Control, you learn to design Control Systems for motion, transport and energy conversion.

  • Analyze and define a problem (applying knowledge on systems engineering to define the problem)
  • Design (Make and combine models of processes, design a controller and implement the control strategy)
  • Manage work processes (Write and present plan of approach, intermediate progress reports and final project result.)
  • Research (Literature research, design and set-up of experiments)
  • Communicate (Defend your idea’s in an oral exam and in a poster presentation)

 

 

 

Admission requirements.

In order to successfully complete the minor, it is important that you have obtained at least 150 EC. A minor will be of most benefit to you if it complements your study and/or your professional profile, is at an appropriate level and does not overlap with your major.

For whom?

Students ELT, ESE, WTB, AUT Also English speaking students (e.g. in exchange programmes) Electrical Engineering (ELT), Embedded Systems Engineering (ESE), Mechanical Engineering (WTB), Automotive Engineering (AUT)

Depending on the programme being followed, the student will develop specific basic knowledge that is necessary for working successfully in a multidisciplinary context. The focus of that basic knowledge thus depends on the student's education. A WTB student therefore needs to work on different basic knowledge than an ELT, ESE or AUT student.

Nice to know

In borderline cases regarding entrance level, an intake will be held. The minor coordinator subsequently takes the final decision regarding admittance.

Assessment
The minor is part of the Electrical Engineering course; the quality of the examination is ensured by the Examination Committee of the HAN Engineering Institute.
